I came to the stark realization a few years back that it's better if he's lying because at least he knows the truth and he's just trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the ignorant. If he actually believed there was a connection between Iraq and 9/11 after all the contrary evidence, that would be altogether worse. Sad commentary but that's the way I cope with it
